Fire safety training general questions

Is Fire Safety training a legal requirement?

Yes, the Regulatory Reform Order 2005 specifies that all employees are given fire safety training. Employers must also provide their employees with understandable and relevant fire safety guidance.

Fire safety training must be kept up to date and guidance should always be displayed clearly. 1st Attendance are experts in employee fire training.

Do employers have to provide fire safety training?

According to UK Government guidance, all employers have a legal obligation to give every employee fire safety training. There must be a designated person with-in the business that is responsible for ensuring that fire safety training is delivered. The person is known as the ‘responsible person’.

Employers, owners, facilities managers, building managers, a managing agent or risk assessor are all legally obliged to ensure that there is a ‘responsible person’ who is accountable for making sure fire safety training is delivered.

How often should you complete basic fire safety training?

It is the employers’ responsibility to train new staff when they start working. It’s also the employers’ responsibility to inform all employees about any existing or new fire risks.

There is no specific time period in which an employer should refresh fire safety training but we would recommend that this should be carried out annually.

We would also suggest that employers stage one fire drill per year and record the results. It’s a good idea to log the results as part of your fire safety and evacuation plan.

Can I deliver fire safety training?

The designated Responsible Person is responsible for fire safety training. However, it is not advised that they deliver the training themselves. This is because they might lack the right level of understanding and experience.

When delivering fire safety training it’s better to hire fire safety training professionals. This is recommended, especially if the building or site  is big or if flammable or combustible products are stored and used there.
