Blocked exits turned a fire into a tragedy
A devastating fire at a crowded venue in Bangkok in July 2026 claimed 30 lives after many people were unable to escape. Investigators reported that most of the victims were found trapped in windowless bathrooms near one of the rear exits. That exit was not used, and people may have been blocked from reaching it by a table set up to sell sweets, or because it was too dark to find the way out.
Access to another exit near the kitchen might also have been narrowed by shelving units and lockers, according to the police chief who visited the scene. There were signs that at least some of the exit doors might have been locked, he added.
In a video shared by the office of the prime minister, during an inspection of the scene, the leader was told a door that was once an exit was bolted, with the proprietor afraid that customers would slip out without paying their bills.
The door had a sign that said “staff only” and could open to the outside, but an official said customers would not have been aware. “If they had run this way, it would have been fine,” he responded.
Investigators were also assessing the ceiling above a performance stage. Police will examine whether flammable materials were used in decorative elements and how electrical wiring was installed across the ceiling.

Keep escape routes clear at all times - it could save your life!
Fire exits, corridors and stairways should never be used for storage, even temporarily. During an evacuation, a clear escape route can make all the difference to whether your employees manage to exit the building or not – not to mention clutter can generally be a major safety and trip hazard.
There have been numerous catastrophic instances where workplace fire escape routes and emergency exits were obstructed, locked, or completely blocked, resulting in mass casualties. Much like our tragic top story this month, workers were either trapped inside or crushed against the barricaded doors by panicked crowds.
To try and prevent this, many employers have been given hefty fines as a result of obstructed escape routes.
You should carry out regular workplace inspections to ensure:
- Fire exits open freely
- Escape routes remain unobstructed
- Fire doors are closed and never wedged open
- Staff know their nearest alternative exit
