What you need to know this month
Helping your team stay safe, confident and prepared
As we head into the summer months, workplaces across the UK face a range of seasonal health and safety challenges. From outdoor working and heat-related illnesses to increased staff holidays affecting first aider coverage, now is the ideal time to review your first aid arrangements and ensure your team remains prepared for emergencies.
Warmer temperatures can increase the likelihood of:
- Heat exhaustion
- Dehydration
- Sunburn
- Insect bites and stings
- Slips, trips and falls during outdoor activities
Managers should ensure employees have access to drinking water, regular breaks and shaded areas where possible. Staff should also be encouraged to recognise the signs of heat-related illness and know how to respond.
Spotting heat exhaustion
Common symptoms include:
- Excessive sweating
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Muscle cramps
- Nausea or weakness
Move the casualty to a cool area, encourage fluid intake and seek medical assistance if symptoms worsen or fail to improve.
Is your workplace prepared?
June is an excellent time to review:
- First aid needs assessments
- First aid kit contents
- Availability of trained first aiders
- Expiring first aid certificates
- AED (defibrillator) locations and maintenance records
- Emergency contact procedures
With summer holidays approaching, organisations should ensure sufficient first aid cover remains available throughout all working hours. Do you need to train more staff? 1st Attendance can help!
